If you didn’t already know it then the Gili islands in Indonesia have quite the reputation for mushrooms. To put it very bluntly, you’ll get offered them a lot, regardless of what you’re doing or where you’re doing it.

Bar – yes.
Beach – yes.
Hostel – yes.
Scuba diving with sea turtles – most likely.

So if that’s to your fancy, then these islands are genuinely your paradise.

The beauty of it is that every now and again you’ll be sitting sipping cocktails with your travel partner in crime when who should walk over but a local Indonesian man. This man may then proceed to tell you (for the next hour) that life is good/just be happy you know/life is really good/ you just got to be happy – you can probably guess the rest of the conversation.

His departing wisdom will be so profound that it’ll truly shock you into silence – ‘sometimes a candle is lighter than the sun, like at night’ or something equally as mesmerising along those lines. Gold, pure damn gold.
